A Black Oak Violin in the Making

Black Oak Violin

We recently went to see our good friend at Harvest Moon studio, a friend for many years, Philip had looked after our band’s violins, bass and acoustic guitars, along with a double bass during the years our band was gigging. The visit was also a time to catch up on the latest news of his work and chat with his sprightly 96 year old mother.

Philip constructed from scratch, the only violin to be made using highly prized wood from a 5,000 year old Black Oak tree, a unique instrument of visual beauty, stunning resonance and aesthetically delightful.

An interview with Philip, the violin’s first public performance and the historical background is available here.

I will be documenting his exciting new project, again involving the black bog oak reclaimed from the fens near Ely.
